Cutaway model of an Incendiary grenade NR12. The Incendiary grenade NR12 is Thermite filled with a burning time of at least 40 seconds at a temperature of 2200 degrees Celcius.
This grenade belonged to the standard equipment of the Dutch armed forces, every vehicle and every Gun had one in it’s toolbox so in case of an emergency -when equipment had to be abandoned with the risc of falling into enemy hands- it could be destroyed. With an artillery piece this meant that the breech was opened, the grenade was placed into the chamber and the breech was closed. The heat generated was enough to burn a hole through the steel of the barrel, rendering the gun useless. With vehicles the Incendiary grenade was primarely placed on radio and communication equipment to prevent it from falling into enemy hands.
The NR 12 incendiary grenade consists of a thin sheet metal grenade body filled with thermite, the top layer is a looser pressing to facilitate an easier ignition. In top of the grenade body a brass threaded bushing is soldered. Below this a sheet metal bushing is placed containing the black powder ignition charge.
The incendiary grenade NR12 uses the NR 19C3/12 fuze on which the pyrotechnic delay tube with detonator has been replaced with a tube with just a pyrotechnic delay, only giving a flame into the ignition charge.
Weight : 735 gram.
Height with fuze : 151 mm.
Height grenade body : 124 mm.
Diameter over rolled seams : 63 mm.
Diameter grenade body : 60,5 mm.
Delay : 3 to 4 seconds.
Colour: Red with a brown band and white text NR12 INCENDIARY.
The Dutch army also used an Incendiary grenade NR12 with a different colour sceme; The grenade body was grey with a violet band and white text NR12 INCENDIARY.
