Hafla (Handflammpatrone) DM 24 A1 B1

Cutaway model of a Hafla (Handflammpatrone) DM 24 A1 B1. The Hafla is meant to create fire and lay smoke screens.
The Hafla DM24 consits of a cartboard tube (1), reinforced on the aft end with an aluminium sleeve (2), which also forms the handgrip. Inside the cartboard tube a plastic tube is placed containing a mixture of red Phosporous and magnesium (3), forming the projectile. The projectile is closed at the front end with a cork disc (4), and has a hole in the backside to ignite the charge upon firing. The Hafla is kept moist free by means of an staerine impregnated cork disc (5) placed before the projectile in the tube.
The trigger group (6) is screwed into the base of the aluminium sleeve (2). It consists of a steel tube (7) housing the spring loaded firing pin (8) which is fixated by a red painted slider (9) with a slot shaped hole stamped out -this forms the trigger-. The flange of the firing pin is locked behind the small slot side of the trigger, and if the trigger is pushed inward the flange of the firing pin will fall into the wide part of the slot shaped hole, releasing the firing pin. The firing pin will ignite the firing cap which ignites the black powder charge DM12B1 (10), which ignites the incendiary charge and launches the projectile from the cartboard barrel.
On the back of the trigger group a rotatable ring (11) is placed which forms the safety; when safe, a slot in the ring interlocks with a slot in the trigger, fixating the trigger. When rotating the ring appr. 30 degrees from safe to armed the trigger can be psuhed inward.

After usage, the Hafla is discarded.
The Hafla DM24 was declared obsolete at the beginning of the 70’s of the last century, to be replaced with the HAFLA DM35, described here:
