Help Identitying Unknown Packing Container

Hello All,

I need some help identifying what these Tubes / Conatiners might be for.

Sellers description follows;

I do not know anything about this item except it is original, and from the WW2 era.

My guess is that it is a protective case for a mortar or large shell. It's not something that you see around anymore these days.

I think the case may be made from pressed cardboard, and printed on the side is "No.42 , and maybe a mark that looks like a '1'. Below that is AS&S 1943.

As for the dimentions, It is about 400mm long, 95mm ext Dia, and about 72mm internal.

Any ideas??

With Many Thanks,

Kind Regards,

Darian.
