Help Needed to identify 40mm shell solid steel WW1 or WW2

Hi I have a fired solid Steel shell with drive band which is about 40 mm x 145 mm , I thought it was WW2 but having cleaned rust etc it seems to show on one side N gv /|\ W on the other side a makers mark (unclear as to what ) then VE? 12.2.12 or 14. can anyone advise what this shell is and if it is a ww1 item .

I think it has VSM as a marking (Vickers and Sons Maxim) and is most likely a 37 mm. Quite possibly before WW1. Other members will have more info I'm sure.

It is likely post ww1 as , from what I can tell it does not fit the profile for the ww1 types of 37mm. It is a bit too far gone to make a really positive ID.

Not sure at which point you measured it but it looks like a 3pr to me, 47mm, with the difference being the metal rusted away. Height of 145mm is correct for a practice, solid shot.
