Hi Andy, your rounds look like 7.62x51mm NATO Rounds manufactured by RG (Radway Green) i think they were used as a grenade blank.

Guys

We need to be careful with our terminology. Noise Blanks and Grenade Cartridges are two entirely different things. Mix them the wrong way and you could end up with a serious train wreck.

true .sorry:tinysmile_twink_t2:

L1a2

The 5.56mm L1A2 cartridge is a training blank, not a grenade discharging cartridge.

AFAIK, all British rifle grenades are of the bullet trap type as there are no 5.56mm grenade discharging cartridges in British service.

ESTC lists a 5.56mm Ballistite L1A1 NSN 1305 99 9747 330. Not sure if it ever entered service.

the l 1s are as confusing as the m 1s .the l1a2 is a blank in 5.45mm and a grenade launching cartridge in 7.62 51 mm.missed three posts while typing.

It can be confusing. The UK uses the L series of identification for every nature it adopts. As you have noted Darrol the same model number will appear across a wide range of natures.
I just ran a quick check on a classification database and can see that we have over 50 different types of ammunition and explosives in the current inventory that are assigned model L1A1
Sadly it doesnt always follow in small arms ammunition that L1A1 in one calibre will be the same type of round as L1A1 in another.

Much appreciated.

Hello gents,
Many thanks for your help in regard to my query, particulary thanks go to Andy, Hasag, Darrol, Ray,and tony.
A little confusing am I right in thinking that the cartridges are Nato type
5.56x45 blanks/training rounds. Regards Andy.

That is interesting. Is it "Round L1A1" or "Cartridge L1A1"? It should be the latter as it does not have a bullet, but "Cartridge L1A1" is surely the training blank.

Can you have a look at the ESTC and see what it says for these two please.

Many thanks
TonyE

The ballisitite L1A1 is "cartridge". No current listing for an L1A1 blank cart. Lowest listing is L1A3 blank carts.

The ADAC (Ammunition Data Acquisition Code) lists that used to be issued when I was in gave names like this:

Cartridge Blank 7.62 mm L13A1,
Round 7.62 mm Ball L2A2,
Round 7.62 mm Tracer L5A3, etc, so there was never ambiguity as to the ammo's intended purpose.
