Hercules gelatin 80%

Sebastian, the LF stands for Low Freezing. I'm attaching an excerpt from a 1917 report. It appears that the companies making the Dynamite kept their Low Freezing formulas of the additives that they added to the nitroglycerin secret, but it would have a nitroglycerine and additives strength equivalent to a concentration of 80% to be classified as an 80% Gelatin.

I can't give you the exact composition for '80% Hercules Gelatin Dynamite', but the general trend for gelatin dynamites is that they contained varying percentages of these or very similar materials:

  • Nitroglycerin
  • Nitrocellulose
  • Sodium nitrate
  • Combustible material
  • Calcium carbonate

An except (screen capture) from the book 'Chemistry Of Powder And Explosives By Tenny L Davis (1943)' is below.

The 80% bit will likely be the 'strength' of the explosive material relative to that of straight dynamite.
