Here's an oddball!

Picked this up off of eBay. Fellow didn't have it described very well, so when it arrived I expected something about a quarter of the actual size. It is a 'Trench Stove" made from two German 150mm. shell casings. Have yet to try it out!! The wife is not impressed, but I love it! :tinysmile_shy_t: The bottom shell is a 1916 Kahrlsruhe (sp?) and the top is not cleaned yet, but is 1917 dated.

Does anyone know what artillery piece these (shells..., not the stove) were used in?

Well, I have to retract the 255. It is actually a 150mm, that was marked 255 on the base. I was lost in the moment. (Corrected it up top) The ebay description had me thinking it was a 3-1/2" base and 6" height, but it is the reverse. The bottom is a December 1916 Karlsruhe and the top is a February, 1917 Magdeburg.

It looks like it will work, but needs new leather gaskets on the pump. Hopefully it isn't considered a 'live' round!!

Please forgive my ignorance, but it appears the 15cm was loaded with a projectile, then a charge behind it? What I'm wondering is how long the original shell casing would be and how much powder it held. Looks like the shell was around 88lbs.

The early model of the howitzer were bag charge with later models using the semi fixed brass case(in which different weights of powder could be added/removed to alter range).casing length about 4or 5 inches(I'ii let you know when I can measure one at home later)
