humble beginnings to my Vietnam collection

Hi guys, A couple of my Vietnam grenades arrived in the post today so I thought to show a picture of what I have so far in my side collection of Vietnam era stuff. In the picture is my m30/62 practice Lemon with a 1/65 date on spoon, My chicom North Vietnamese stick grenade, m69 practice baseball grenade, star shell 40mm parachute flare round dated 72, and my Beater 64 dated m31 practice rifle grenade. I have a few more things on the way and a few deals on the boiler so in my hopes I will end up with a decent representation. I am internal turmoil whether or not to re-paint and age the Lemon but have been advised to a few collectors to leave it alone, so kind of up in the air. A few more opinions on that would be great........Dano
P.S. Carved in the handle of Viet Cong stick is "to Toni from Tom" which personalizes the piece in my opinion. I just wonder how a woman feels getting a stick grenade as a gift. Similar to giving her a "miracle mop" for christmas...D

Viet Cong stick grenade close up

Just had to do a close up on the Viet Cong stick. I was really happy to get this one, probably paid too much for it but had to have it. Ended up in an auction bidding war to get it which goes against most everything I stand for. I love this one....Dano

Sorry for the price increase Dano. Yeah, that was me. But you knew that. I just didn't know, that was you. Now I do. I'm trying to branch out into Vietnam stuff as well. Next time, I "might" go easier on you.

Hi Trenchwarfare, No I had no idea it was you I was bidding against. Was glad to get it as I was not going any higher than my last bid. In fact I put the bid in and shut the computer off until it was over, turne computer back on and had won it. I guess it's bound to happen (2 BOCN members bidding against each other). All's fair in bidding and war. In the end I think it was worth it. One thing for sure, if I run across another one I will tip you off about it. Good collecting. Sorry buddy...dano

Hi Dano, You’re off to a great start, I still don’t have a nice M31. I had a bit of a clean-up today and thought I’d put a few of my favourite pieces together from that era. Hope they are of interest. Cheers

Vietnam collection Nov. 18 2010

Here is a picture of my thought Vietnam ordnance collection as of 18 November 2010. There are others on the way, Claymore set, 1/2lb stick of medium velocity dynamite amongst a few others, but this is my start. Again I have by no means abandoned WWI as my main collection but merely made it into a 2 pronged offensive. I am having fun and having it on a total shoestring budget. I am about 2-3 years too young to have been involved in the Vietnam conflict, but in those days it was sure first on my mind. Thanks to all who have directly or indirectly helped in my quest....Dano

Hey Dan, if you want a correct cap for that 40mm white paraflare, drop me a PM, and I'll send you one. Looks like you have half a ping pong ball with a black W in sharpie there...

Dang grog18b, you are on to me. It was a half measure for display purposes, yes, I could sure use the correct piece. Was partying and made this "make-shift" thing to 1/2 ass what belongs in there. The tip was made from the end of a 40mm foam riot projectile. Sharpie (accept no substitutes!!!!) and all....Dano

Dano,

Nice start to a collection. Remember, the Smithsonian started with one item at some point. Better start thinking of a bigger house!

Dano,

you destroyed one of MY foam 40mm projectile heads I sent you about a year ago? You should be ashamed of yourself especially drinking when doing it....:tinysmile_twink_t2:

No Mark, Yes I was drinking, but it was not the head of one of your 40mm riot heads but another from another deal.....Dan

No reaSON TO BE SORRY GROG, I realize it is a sorry ass excuse for a cap and was definately under the influence of intoxicating substance(s) while doing the deed. I would humbly take you up on your offer for the correct cap. Biggest thing on my mind right now is I paid for my Claymore set on Nov 8th, the set is here in the U.S., here it is almost Thanksgiving and still no Claymore set. GB dealers phone is dis-connected and he aint answering e-mails. Hope I'm worried about nothing. Also thanks to all for the nice compliments on the start to my new era of collecting. It is kinda like being a kid again, because just about everything I find to this point is new to me. Going after Vietnam a bit different than my approach to WWI as the stuff seems to be somewhat readily available. You run into all price ranges depending on what it is you want. One thing for me collecting Vietnam that is exactly the same as collecting WW1 is the fact that if I shell out large dollars for something it pretnear better make me wet my pants!!!! Dano
