ID help need MG34/42 type Ammo can?

Picked up whay i initially thought was the usual MG34/42 ammo can.
Couldn`t find the usual WaA markings where would expect them so decided to lightly bead blast off the rust.
Only marking I found was a R with a crown above (much like the WWI era Kriegsmarine) & 1918 next to it.
There isn`t room for the seal in the lid.
Is this a late WWI German MG ammo can or not?

German WWI Patronenkasten 15. Usually these are made of slightly thicker steel plate than WWII boxes.

will do a bit more research
It does seem a bit heavier than the later MG34/42 ones
It is in very good sound condition - apart from the all over surface rust!!
Not a bad find for ten Euros then?
