Any info possible would be helpful. Came from Eglin AFB in 1970s. Everything is as shown, cartridge case wall is extremely thick.

I have seen projectiles much like this before, and if I remember correctly it was made for armor testing. I could easily be wrong though.

Thanks for the responses, it is a start.

I did not have a chance to measure, if I can get back I will try. From my photo I would say 80mm case length. I was told that it was a 25mm and that looked consistent with some Bradley stuff that was nearby.

The most unusual feature was the case thickness, looked like about 4mm, very heavy. Any theories as to why? I was wondering about perhaps a lightweight gun, but if you have to beef up the cartridge where is the advantage?

Hawkinson listing shows the following. This is all the information I have:

25 x 80
Belted
33.2 mm rim
Brass case
25mm EGLIN AFB Exp (Pre 1970). 18.2mm Screw in Primer. The case is 3.2mm Thick. Mouth internal diameter is 25mm and outer diameter 31mm
USA

I was surprised there wasn't anything in Dale Davis book.

Dave.

US-Subs,

Just a suggestion, you may want to run this by Lew Curtis (forum member here and the IAA) who was stationed at Eglin AFB in the late 1970's and he new many of the people at the USAF Armament Lab located at Eglin. Lew has presented information on the IAA forum concerning several different ammunition research projects conducted by the lab.

If you type in Eglin in the search function on the IAA forum page a number of threads on various projects will show up.

A discussion on one project shows a picture of a 20mm gyro rocket projectile that has a profile similar to the projectile in cartridge you show above, scroll about half way down the page: http://iaaforum.org/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9365&start=15

Thanks, a very good idea, but already done and moved beyond. All normal sources were tapped out, I suggested BOCN, we're fishing here in hopes of a hit in untried waters.
