Hi Gents
One of the French guys working with me lives in Normandy in a very old house. Anyway when he moved in about 10 years ago he found some boxes & clips of ammunition amongst other items in the loft & cellar.
He brought in several WWII items which I have ID`d for hime (as well as letting him know they are live!!) but this one has me stumped!
It looks straight away like a NATO 7.62 x 51 but dims are: 7.77 x 54mm?
Headstamp is MR 30 DO 4
Projectile appears to be cupro nickel jacket but a magnet goes to it like the proverbial to a blanket! Could it be steel (AP) cored?
Also were WWII US made .45 auto bullets ever steel cored? - reason is he has a very nice .45 round in steel case HS is E (@ 900) C (@ 1200) S (@ 300) 43 (@ 600) & again magnet loves this projectile (copper jacket) but not as much the case?!!
Ideas?
