SMK or CHEM ?

Looks a little like a smoke discharger can froma Base Ejecting smoke shell but it is unusual to find them in Alloy-Chemical discharger perhaps ?

If its chemical it's pretty rare - not something typical of German, US, UK or Italy.

Very similar appearance to German WW2 color smoke signals but dimensions do not quite fit.

You write was I was thinking.
German Landungsrauchzeichen, or maybe better, a Rauchsichtzeichen.
Similar emission holes?

Any traces of paint or paper label?

It seems you've got it there.
Looks identical.
Well done.

Lex
