The base is for a 2" mortar.. either smoke or Illum. the body looks weird... maybe chromed? The nose is nothing that I have ever seen on a 2" mortar.

The body is effectively the body off a Illuminating or a colored star 2 inch mortar.
Could this strange cap on this type of mortar (never seen!) not be a sort of ballistic cap ?

A test shot ? That should explain the red colour to find the shot back !
