IJA Goniometer 測角器

BOUGAINVILLE

Well-Known Member
Here is an Imperial Japanese Army Goniometer. These were used to survey angles for artillery fire control.

Came across this website on the internet that has this very interesting article about Japanese Artillery Doctrine.

Here is what it says about the use of Goniometers;

測地 sokuchi means (geodesic) survey. Civilians and the navy prefeered the word 測量 sokuryo but the meaning was the same. Artillery leaders should make a cobweb-like survey map before combat including guns (horetsu), observation post and outstanding landmarks.

測角器 sokkakuki appeared in their documentation on tools. This seemed to be a circumferentor, a survey instrument. Today this word disappears from Japanese and 測角器 refers instead to a goniometer.

標定 hyoutei roughly means spotting. Especially getting the enemy's position by triangulating with two or more observation posts. A nest of well-surveyed observation points (hyoteimo, 標定網) was essential for successful hyotei.
