Seems an odd thing to be at Verdun ?
Original German WW1 photo in size of a postcard (Real photo postcard). The Rabenwald (raven forest) was located west of the Maas river near Toter Mann.

hi,
You are right, the photography is au "Bois des corbeaux", but at that time, the russians were in Champagne front instead of frenchs, busy to defend the big assault on Verdun.
Therefore, i sincerely think that the soldiers on the picture are of advantage of germans, armed with home made hand grenade ("Pétard raquette" type).
The grenade attachment is very similar to that of the postcard. That's only my opinion...

Best regards
JM
