2 5/8" length. Brass piece with heavy thread soldered on. Is this part of a known type?
Should I remove the brass piece.

The flats on the Brass ring almost look sort of "right" but for what I do not know, also that thread is very coarse for fitting it to anything.
The looks of it and the really coarse thread would lead me to think it is very old-perhaps 1 WW ?

Overall I would guess (and that is all it is) that the Brass part has been added so the body can attach to something else.
 
I suspect that also, but I wonder what the main body is or is part of, in size it is rather like the French granades rather than U.S. I listed it on ebay us "trench art" but if somebody here recognizes it and can use it I will kill the auction.
