While on holiday in Southern Brittany many years ago my wife and I visited a town there on market day. While walking around I noticed what looked like old cannons half buried around street corners or in narrow alleys - much like rocks dug into street corners and edges in some old parts of towns in the UK. I guess the idea was to stop carts running over pedestrians.
