Apart from the casinos, shopping, couple of submachine gun ranges and heaps of weirdos handing out girlie cards, are there any ordnance related (museums) to visit in the area?

About a 4 hour drive. Not really in the area, but. . .

A museum I always liked is China Lake, also 4 hours away. It is a great museum, CL has been a development center for the Navy for decades. If you take the north route it is longer but you go past Sequoia National Park, another good visit but no bombs or bullets. http://www.chinalakemuseum.org/
