M1 Pull Switch Question

I know more about WW2 British sabotage and booby trap devices than U.S. ones, so this is probably a bone head question. Here is what I think is a U.S. M1 pull switch. What is the black plastic piece on the end? A cover? A small detonator?

the black plastic sleeve is a protective cap to keep the adapter clean
