M249

I own a stupidly expensive Airsoft electric M249. As close to the real thing as one can get without the bureaucratic hassle. Have had the pleasure of playing with the real thing. A fine firearm by anyone's measure.

This article tells the tale of its birth and success.

So, for around (only) $20k, I can have one of each. Now, for the ammo supply. @$1 +/- per bang. Guess I'll just go and rub on my "Airsoft".

What would it cost to get a dealer's license and just get an original full auto? 2-3 K?

$500/yr for a Class 3 license. All M249s are dealer samples(there are maybe 10 transferable ones)(@$100k+). About $7k for one of those. Besides the "start-up" expense, a day of shooting would not be cheap. $.60-$.75/pop. Figure $5/sec. They go fast. Hence, Airsoft.
