M821 81mm mortar markings

I picked up a few scrapped 81mm mortar bodies for pennies. Only one had markings I could make out, it was white inked, not engraved. I could only see " M13976002-... 81MM HE M821 " in about 1/4 inch ink mark, and that was it. There was one engraved marking, a " O" was near the fin just below the ink markings. They have remnants of a red stripe, question, what does the red stripe mean?
