M92 box

I have an M92 steel ammunition box, the lid is stamped M92 above TS I 1941 it still has rubber sheaths on the handle. The original paint inside is bronze green, the exterior has been over painted at some time in its' life with aluminium colour paint and has hand painted 22 on lid sides and end, presumably used for storing 22 rimfire ammunition, or simply box number 22.

What would an M92 box have originally been used for?

Is it worthwhile trying to remove the aluminium paint with thinners?

Yes, it's worth stripping (carefully)of its silver paint, then maybe you can enlighten us into what the contents were before it was painted!

Cheers
