Hopefully of interest to some: Shrapnel and HE shell were made from bar steel or forged steel, but some chemical loaded shell were cast. The attached images - from a factory photograph album sequence showing the manufacturing process at a Scottish munitions factory in WWI - are of 6-inch chemical shell.

The captions are as labelled in the photo album. The assembly of the mould boxes with the cores clearly visible, the casting, and the emptying of the mould boxes are all steps for any cast munition.
