Massive Bullet? for ID please.

With bdgreen. 1 inch Nordenfelt.
Although wasn`t there a French 25mm round that fired a solid lead projectile?

It is the bullet from a 1 inch Aiming Rifle, not a Nordenfelt. The Nordenfelt bullets had a brass jacket.

It is from one of the early blackpowder loaded rounds, either electric of percussion, but it is impossible to say which as they used similar bullets. It is not from a cordite loaded round as these generally had two cannelures, not three, and had a copper gas check crimped to the base of the bullet.

Thanks very much for your informative replies!! Would anybody be able to post a picture of a rifle it would have been fired from? I did a lot of google image searches under 1 inch aiming rifle and couldn't find anything. I found many Martini Henry bullets at the same place so I guess it's from the Victorian era? Is it 1 inch caliber? Is this the type of gun that would have fired it?:

Thanks!!

No, that is a 1 inch Gatling gun, something quite different.

The 1 inch Aiming Rifle was a unit that fitted inside a larger gun, say a 6 inch naval gun, and was used for aiming practice as the name suggests. It was not a stand alone weapon, but could only be used within a larger weapon. The Royal Navy tended to use electrically primed rounds as the big naval guns were electrically fired, whilst the army used the percussion fired version as Land service guns were percussion fired by striker.

This is the only half decent image I could find that shows an aiming rifle mounted in a larger gun.

Aiming rifles were in service from about 1894 until WW2.
