Military Brushes - Were used for what?

Found these brushes at an antique fair this weekend.

I see the South African "U" with the broad arrow. (used by South African military). There is also An Air Ministries logo on one. Also various dates 1938 - 1943.

Any one have some idea what these may have been used for?
