Mills 36 M Mk1

I recently bought a Mills 36M Mk1 with the stamps T.A.S (T. Ashead & Sons.)

The baseplug is marked (identified as) S. Joseph Stokes Rubber Co.

Does this baseplug belongs to this T.A.S Mills grenade, or is it just put together from different parts/brands?

As i'm fairly new to collecting, i was wondering that the price i paid was fair.( About 12 pounds)

Hi John,

a very nice gren, a real bargain at 12. They usually go for a minimun of about 50 so well done there.

As for the base plug, i reccon it could be a seperate addition but who can tell as the gren cant talk. Not all manufacturers made all of the gren parts and most were put together at Royal Ordnance Factories, some producers doing it all themselves.

Nice gren, any more at that price?

Thanks for your reply.
It was the only one unfortunately. The story behind it is that it was thrown in a house in WWII in the Netherlands and it didn't detonate. After that the explosive material was removed and the family of the house kept the grenade till they gave it away. That person sold it to me.

Stories are hard to check if it's true, so its a nice story, but thats about it.

I'm glad the price was right

Hi John,

its not often you come across ordnance such as grens with a history. I have one coming soon, a WW1 gren made in Brighton in 1915. I would suggest you make a note of this and keep it with the gren, ime sure it will increase its value, and certainly make it a more interesting item.

Very nice bargain there John,
I would have tried to out-bid you if I'd known about the sale, or was it private?
Make sure to keep the history with it, I photograph and save all on disc's. Also make history lable's for anything I have on display. It's a painstaking task but very satisfying when the display starts to take shape.
Hope your good luck stays with you,
Very best regards,
navyman.
