Mills 36 Training Grenades

About 18 months ago I bought an original Mills 36 crate with 6 white training grenades all minus levers, strickers, but with original baseplugs. Baseplugs were mainly dated 1944 as were some of the centrepieces.

I thought I might bring some to the market. A couple were in very rough condition with all the paint ( a white distemper type) well worn and with earth still stuck in the grooves.

About an hours work cleaned one up and I'm quite impressed by the near mint grenade that emerged. All that throwing practice and they still look good. Here's a photo.

cleaned up really well. . and as you say .. in great shape.
although personaly id keep the original paint on it myself.

This crate has been round the block. Interesting set of stencils. It has obviously spent its life in Kent. It's last home before disposal was the TA.

Most of these training grenades were either factory rejects or were made specifically for training and were given the 5 holes in the factory.

Your grenade has been converted back. There are quite a few on the market that have been put back to operational shape. About 10 years ago a Belgian dealer bought hundreds of Canadian made training grenades that had been in store with the Dutch Army. These have been welded up, repainted and sold off. These are good looking grenades. This stock is now nearly exhausted.

The Canadian grenades all have G (for Galt) on the front. There are probably other people who have done the same conversion on other training grenades, as the end product is worth a few pounds more at re-sale.

What does yours have marked on the front of the body? The 2C will be a cast mark, not the makers.
