Mills Grenade No5 Mk1

New Member
Greetings all ...... brand new to this site.

I have the original blueprint of the No5 Mk1. It was drawn by a dentist in Wales who was a conscientious objector and pressed into drawing up such documents. The blueprint is in in 2 pieces and not in the best of condition, but can anyone throw any light as to value of such an item? I can provide additional photos.

Thanks in advance
Pete

Pete, thanks, I was hoping to see somewhere a series of dates, successively crossed through as below. I'm looking for a certain date. Has a corner -potentially with dates - been torn off?

Yes Tom .... as stated, it's in pretty poor nick with a couple of corners 'diffy'. (My fault entirely) The drawings look very similar.

Cheers

OK thanks, no worries. I don't know what the T No. is, although T might refer to Tracing as the drawings were copied numerous times... and the Grenade Section Drawing Office employed a large number of tracers.

The first proper drawings of the No 5 were submitted by Mills Munitions to the CIW in early April 1915. CIW made some comments regarding alternate castings and it's likely the CIW's own version was finalised in mid May 1915 and copied out to manufacturers thereafter. Hence Tom's copy having an early June date.

It's an interesting story about the draughtsman being a conscientious objector. That's a great find.

Tom,

Some corners for you, just in the unlikely event that you have not already seen all of my corners.

Plus a section showing the No 5 Mark II nomencature (for John really).

Thanks Norman, The 2nd image seems unreadable - looks like an amazing series of dates.

...and another from the Filling Drawing which goes with the filling specification approved August 1915.

John,

Apologies for the thin image. I will try to extract more from the images if there is something you particularly want.

Thanks very much Norman. I've very pleased with the dates in post 10. If you can find more I'd appreciate it. You have my email.

I'm still trying to put together the giant jigsaw that is the Mills.

Cheers

John

Norman,

Thanks for the corner collection - all collated in one place now.

The attached might be of interest to some as being the source of many of the TW drawings. Four print machine operators so the DO was certainly churning out drawings. This chart dates from September 1917.
