Mills lever

butterfly

HONOURED MEMBER RIP
Dont often post under 'Grenades' but was given a Mills lever the other day which is maker marked.

Its a No36 type lever and is marked toward the top near the two lugs.

the markings are as follows; ACM and beneath that inside a diamond the letter M

I looked on Daves site and found a Grenade marked up the same ; ACM Ames Crosta Mills
anyone got any further information on this manufacture? location?

regards Kev

Kev, have a look at post #6 here:

A separate letter usually defines the district or area of manufacture. M for Manchester, B for Birmingham, L for London.

ACM pre-War were a cast iron founder specialising in sewage and sanitation products.

Thanks for this Tom, excellent info.

Just one more thing, would the order for 50,000 Grenades have included the levers or would they have been produced under another order? ....and is it possible that ACM continued to produce levers even though they had no more orders for the Grenade bodies?

regards Kev

The order would have been for the complete article, but whether ACM made their own levers or sub-contracted out was up to them and their manufacturing capabilities at the time. It is possible they made No.36 levers beyond the grenade contract but I can't confirm that.

Certainly some companies did exactly that - for example, Follows and Bate (Gorton, Manchester) received orders for 110,750 No.36 and then went on to produce, amongst other things, 100,000 levers per week for Davis and Brocklesby, Manchester.
