Naval Ammunition Boxes

I know that Naval (Royal Navy) ammunition boxes were painted STONE but wondered if anyone has a BS number? Cheers Gary

Gary,

The ones that I've seen are two tone, stone and brown, I've never been able to find out why.

Light Stone is BS381C - 361

Hi Tim, Have you seen the ones at Explosion! in Portsmouth...... Not quite sure what is going on there, unless its a wartime / post war comparison colour scheme. Are you sure Light Stone 361 is the correct colour? 362 is middle stone! Cheers Gary

Gary,

Apologies, you're right, it should be Middle Stone BS381 - 362.

Yes they are the ones I've seen. I've seen a publication with the same scheme. The only explanation, which is a guess, is maybe when they contain ordnance they are stored one way around and when empty they are stored the other way around. Thus giving an instant visual guide in the magazine.

Regards

Cheers Tim, Will get some paint mixed. Can you remember which publication you saw the two tone scheme in? When I was last at Explosion! the chap on the counter didn't know the answer.... Cheers Gary

Gary,

I thought it was 'Inter Service Markings' which is in the downloads section - but it isn't. However, it is showing stone as light stone BS381-361. I don't have my other references to hand at the moment, I will check in the morning.
