Navy 6"/40 round...

Here is an early U.S. Naval round that you won't see too often. It's a 6"/40 brass casing with it's inert AP projectile. The dimensions of the casing are 6 & 1/4 X 41 & 5/8. The projectile is 20 & 3/4" in length. I've included a photograph of a 6"/40 gun that was removed from the U.S.S. Maine after it's sinking in 1898 and put on display at the Washington Navy Yard.

Best regards,

Randall

G-Day Shelldude,

Could we see the headstamp of the cart. please?

Also the stampings on the base of the projectile & drive band profile.

I am interested because we see 6" projectiles similar to this here in Australia.

Thanks,

Regards Ozzie.

Hello John & Ozzie,

John, the brass casing is inscribed: W.R.A. Co 3-1900
(WRA = Winchester Repeating Arms.)

Ozzie, I've included a photograph of the rotating band profile. Hope this helps. The inert projectile was obviously stored on ROUGH concrete. I'm unable to decipher any inscriptions on the base.

Best regards,

Randall
