Just looks like a large stick on Dynamite. They can be up to 4 or 5 inches in diameter. 2-1/2 X 18 inches is a common size.
 
Looks like it could be for use with a Bangalore torpedo that the middle guy is holding. And it also looks like it is already wired to the Bickford cord.
