Newbie questions again...

Hello folks.

As I just started to get into collecting, I have few questions.

1 - Cleaning. Do or don't? If do, what would be the best method? Is nail polish remover ok? What about unstruck primers, are they safe to be cleaned at all? What would happen if it for some reason goes off?

I don't want to remove any age-related marks or primer seals, just to remove the dirt that stays on my fingers every time i pick up the bullet.

2 - Sources. Anyone knows a shop with wide variety of 9mm rounds? I did check few online stores, but unfortunately no real big choice. Or maybe somebody has few spare for sale? If so, please let me know, I'm sure we can arrange a good deal for both sides ;). By 'wide variety' I mean different case stamps, bullets, seals, dates etc :).

Also, is there any place around Chesterfield/Sheffield, where I could stock up?

I think that's all for now, and I'm sure I will have more questions soon :).

All the best,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Cleaning is a matter of personal preference. Soap and warm water should remove surface dirt, together with a gentle brushing. White spirit will remove grease without (hopefully) removing markings.

If the case is stained, slightly more vigorous brushing with a brass brush may be required. Some collectors like to see their cases bright and shiny, so use polish, but most collectors like to see the natural age patina. A polished case will eventually tone down, if left.

Don't know of any shops that sell inert ammo; my recommendation would be to join ECRA, and attend the meetings (2 at Bisley. 1 up near Hull in the summer). Meeting other collectors is the best way by far of increasing your collection and knowledge.

Good luck and best wishes,
Roger.

Andy, once more thanks for the link, this site is amazing :). Already bought some small stuff and am looking for more.

Hi tom,
Shine reduced the value of your old cartridges. The preservation of the patina to me is advisable. If a cartridge is strongly affected pollish may be needed, however not brushing prevalences. In that case, I would opt for a mild polish and always rinse well.

Brushing a primer can never lead to igniting it. to ignite the primer needs a velle tap with a pointed object.

excuses for my poor english
regards Hans
