No 23 Cutaway Grenade

MissingSomething

Well-Known Member
Another Gunshow find. Again supposedly a Longbranch done cutaway. Missing a filler screw (now looking for). "GD" marked spoon.
Base plug marked "GDR" 7-17 and No. 23 Mk II

Looks good. I've not heard of Longbranch cutaways. Most were done be EA Radnal or Brooks & Doxey. What is the maker on the baseplug?

John

From what I understand Long Branch (arsenals) was created in WW2 and the No23 was no longer in service by then so I'm having some doubts that it would have been done by them. Unless you're talking about a different company.

I am not saying it was done during WW1. The cutaway was done at Long Branch (by an employee) when the grenade was there. I do believe it was a "one of" and not something that they did on a regular basis.

It looks like who ever did it made a good cutaway based on the WW1 style. If you lever has GD on it you probably need to change that to a proper 23 lever. John

I understand that, I was saying that during WW2 the No23 was no longer in service. Regardless, I'm not familiar with the story of grenades being made into cutaways by individual employees at the Long Branch facility. I would be interested in learning more about this. Why was it done? Is this story/practice documented? Has this been discussed on the forum before?

Heres one i have that that came in a cardboard box with ?? bombing/bomber school ? written on it, the person i got from threw away the box as rubbish as he couldn't be bothered to carry it around with him:tinysmile_cry_t4:

I asked the seller about documentation. He was going to get back to me. I guess he got this and some other items from a former employee of the facility and he got them when he left. He was going to get it in writing from the employee. Other than that...
