No.36 Grenade box closure and internal bits


Can someone explain and/or show a photo of how a G36 box was closed at the factory? Were the ropes simply tied at the top? Also, one of my original boxes has two pieces of wire attached to the rear side and I'm curious what those were used for.

This box also includes some loose wood wedges that fit between the grenades (between the grenades at the top and bottom in the third photo) and I've never seen these in any other photos of boxes so I'm not sure how many were originally included. Any ideas?

I believe the center between the two wedges inside housed the detonator tin that held 12 detonators, quite a large size tin. Not sure about the rope and wire only seen carry rope on the ends.

The two lengths of 16swg galvanised iron wire were used to seal the box lid after packing at the Filling Station. Each length went over the lid inboard of the batten and stapled to the lid with a single 1/2" staple. Ends of wire terminated in a loop and fixed to edge of bottom plank with a 3/4" nail.

The free ends of the central rope were tied in a knot.

Eight wedge packing pieces supplied loose per box, four placed at each end as shown in the third image of original post.

Snufkin, the second photo shared by Fragman shows 12 of the wedges. Is that because it's a Kiwi box and that they had different packing standards? Any idea?

Perhaps the Kiwis were more sensitive to rattly boxes of grenades... The design drawing states eight wedge sections and period photo from 1918 shows eight.

Perfect... now there is no doubt about it. Looks like I need to make a few as my second box doesn't have any. Trick will be to age them so as not to look out of place.
