Odd German 50kg case - help please

Hi all,

This rather pitted 50kg German bomb case came in with some other items, at first I thought it was a bog standard SC50 but there is something odd going on around the base collar that I have not personally seen before.

There is what appears to be a seperate sheet steel collar that extends beyond the bomb casing for the tail fin to fix to. Normally the tail fin locating screws, screw directly into the bomb casing.

It is simular to a Brandbombe C-50 but I have not seen a C-50 that has the standard filler plug that would be found on a normal SC50. Also the metal does not seem to be thick enough to take a thread for the screw? The nuts welded on the inside of the steel collar I guess have been added recently? they certainly do not look very old or very German to me!

Can anyone please confirm which type of 50kg this is a drawing would be great if anyone has one, I am considering replacing the fuze pocket with a spare one I have and I would also like to do something about the tatty collar but at the moment I do not really understand how the tail fin would screw into this thin gauge material.

It did have a rather nice near mint tail fin on it which I have fitted to another bomb case that is in better condition to suit the condition of the tail fin, it looked a bit odd having a mint tail fin on such a badly pitted bomb case.

I look forward to hopefully finding out a little more about this one as it has me stumped!

Lovely job chaps – thank you!! shame it is so pitted but hay ho, next challenge to repair the shredded end flange :tinysmile_cry_t2:

It is difficult to tell from the technical drawing supplied by Jacleon (thank you by the way Jacleon) did the tail fin screws fix into a collar which formed part of the tail fin? just cannot see enough "meat" for a fix into a normal SC tail fin, there wouldn't be enough for the screw thread to pick up on. Not sure if I am explaining myself very clearly but hopefully someone will know what I mean!

Hello,

Herewith, pictures of a nice "SC50 J" I found in France (with original paint green and yellow and black markings J II).
I hope these pictures can help to understand construction of tail of J series. Screws between bomb and adaptor and pins between adaptor and tail.
Your bomb seems to be different.
Regards

Thank you for the photos, that looks like a lovely example, guessing it has been disposed of now? I will compare again on mine so I can fully understand, I could not see any of the lower screws on my case but then again it is so pitted they could be very hard to spot.
