Some images that might be of interest - an original, untouched (since 1917) string pull assembly. They show how snugly the porcelain bead fits into the base of the handle, how the handle is sealed by a wooden plug of just slightly bigger diameter than the holder of the friction igniter, and then how the string hole is also sealed with a small wooden plug.
