This is probably my fav Grenade in my collection..and the funny story about how I got.
I made a deal with an older collector that was going to start getting rid of his stuff, it was in an out building, and was in boxes ect.

One day I drove the 3-4 hours to get there, and he had pulled aside a lot of items he thought I would like, well about half I wanted, the rest "NO", however I have learned that when you deal with some people, if you upset them, then you can never come back. so I bought it all.

When I was loading me Jeep, he came out with a clear plastic bag, that had something wrapped in newspaper on the inside, on the plastic bag was written, " WW2 American Practice Rifle Grenade".. I really was not interested and never checked the bag... as I was about to leave, he said that as I had bought so much, he would give me a deal on this one...so I paid the $20 he offered it to me for.
I got home, and went through the stuff, both good and bad that I had bought..the bag being the last thing I opened..well I was happy I bought i as this was inside, I do not know if he knew what it was and was playing a bit of a joke.

But I am happy with it

Stunning . Probably one of the best , most original No 1 Mk III's I've ever seen & a wonderful story about its procurement ! Thanks for sharing .

Very nice to seeing the filling stencilling and confirmation of 80/20 amatol. A lovely find.

Thank you guys!!! I Love this one, I was made a very high offer for it, but turned it down!!

That's a good point but it's probably a Mk III . Note that the carrying clip is attached under the frag ring & not soldered to the side . That said , however , there are sometimes exceptions . As with nearly all British WW1 grenades the accepted design standards are not always what appears on the actual article & you occasionally come across anomalies . This is particularly true with the No 3 Mk 1 where there can be dozens of variations .

Dean,

You may or may not realise that the safety pin is incorrect. See attached for photo's of my tatty Mk.III, (showing the two part fragmentation ring and 'tinned' body) and the safety pin arrangement.

TimG, I put that pin in myself as it had none and I did not know what the proper pin would look like.

Thank you for that photo, now I know and perhaps can get one made.
