Please identify

This piece is from work (it has been destroyed long ago)
I still happened to have the picture on my phone.
At the time, no one could say exactly what it was, perhaps you can help.
It was in a bomb crater with a few aluminum aircraft parts and a lot of other junk from the time.
Basically, everything that could be disposed of most easily after the war; there were more than enough bombs and shell holes in Germany.

Is it a smoke or flare signaling device that pilots carried?
If so, please provide some details. Thank you very much.

I cannot be specific but think it was something such as a flare or smoke device as you say. Part of the wording I can read is "Hold signal firmly away from body" . Perhaps it was a pyrotechnic device to produce smoke or a bright flame for rescuers or others to see.

OK, so as to not muddy the waters. Not these exact things but a similar device. Smoke if you activate from one end, a flare if you activate it from the other.
