PMA-2 Yugoslav anti personel blast mine

Cutaway model of a Yugoslav PMA-2 anti-personnel blast mine. The mine is made of a PVC cup with a lid glued over it. In the centre of the lid a threaded hole is drilled which houses the UPMAH-2 friction ignited pressure fuze.
The explosive charge is a 95 grams cylindrical block of TNT with a hole drilled in the centre which houses a small RDX booster pellet.
The UPMAH-2 fuze housing has a threaded hole in the base that allows the Bakelite detonator housing to be screwed in. The detonator pellet is placed in an aluminium cup. A match composition is placed above the detonator , and below the firing pin. The firing pin is a pointed PVC pin with six plungers in a star shape on the top. A white rubber ring is placed around the firing pin. It forms the resistance when pushing down the firing pin and it also keeps the inner works of the fuze dry. When a pressure of approximately 7 kg is placed on one or more of the plungers the firing pin is driven into the match composition which ignites, igniting the detonator, the booster charge and the main charge.
The mine is normally buried until only the six plungers in a star shape protrude above the ground.

Due to the small surface of the pressure plungers , the mine is non sensitive to mine clearance methods like explosive overpressure.
As the mine only contains a minimum amount of metal (aluminium cup in detonator) it is difficult to find with a metal detector.

Mine Data:

Weight complete mine: 135 grams
Weight of the explosive charge: 95 grams of TNT
Diameter : 68mm
Height: 61mm

The mine is produced in the colours green and white (winter version).

The PMA-2 has been found in: Albania, Angola, Bosnia, Cambodia, Croatia, Kosovo, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Regards, DJH
