i would like to ask if anyone knows when the muzzle break was used in production and for which designated model..
from a small search i found it was for the MKIV and MKV ... is this correct ?

Thank you!IMG_7822.jpg

Hi Rafail,I just did a quick search and came up with this info,6pdr,entered service late 1941,the Mk 1V fitted with the L50 barrel and a single baffle muzzle brake, the 6pdr fitted to various tanks were also fitted with a similar muzzle brake, this was also around 1941,the US built version did not have a muzzle brake, hope this helps,
Cheers,
Don,

Thank you Don.

I am asking cause i want to make a small display for my collection with this muzzle brake..
Engrave a small brass plate on a flat wood base and i want to make it look correct...
Engrave plate will write

Ord QF 6pr 7Cwt MkIV 1944 A/T Gun

Tankbarrel : yep these are mine...photo 2.jpg

Hi Rafail,I have seen pics of the 6pdr,being used in the desert campaign, these did not have a muzzle brake, the earliest reference I can find to the fitting of a muzzle brake is 1941,the same gun was fitted to tanks with a (L43) shorter barrel,to compensate for a drop in muzzle velocity,"quote" a cast muzzle brake was fitted together with an increased propellant charge in the shell,"unquote",in view of this increase in power/penetration it was later decided to revert to the longer L50 barrel, presumably with the muzzle brake,I see in your pics you have two types of brake, are they both the same size or is one for the 17pdr,
Cheers,
Don,

The sequence doesn't sound quite right. Both the towed anti-tank (Mk 2) and tank (Mk 3) guns were originally made with L43 barrels rather than the L50 designed for, because of production limitations. L50 barrels were then fitted to both towed (Mk 4) and tank (Mk 5) guns once the production problems were overcome. This was a separate issue from the decision to uprate the muzzle velocity of the AP shot.

The ammo used in the 6pr (and US 57mm) is detailed in my article here: http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/Molins.htm
