These are too rare in the US to let one go to waste because someone cut off the top 40mm. I fabricated a replacement top and press fit it into place. The one that was cut is dated 1940.
Thank you for your comments gentlemen. However, that was a really good camera angle. When you see it from this angle, it still needs work. Should I attempt to fill in the gap with lead solder?
Rich - What aging technique would you recommend - oil and heat?
Yes, there would be a bead that would need to be turned down, or filed off, but there wouldn't be a seam cut any more. Use a strip off of a similar material cartridge case for filler rod, if you use filler.
