Roll controlled/guided mortar

UK has been playing with development of guided mortars since the 70s (Merlin), with some excellent examples preserved in a couple of the EOD collections. The Soviets made a guided version of their 240mm which was reportedly nuke capable. They keep a cutaway example of the basic system under wraps at the Artillery Museum in St. Petersburg. The 240mm I've posted photos of before, the Merlin I've got a couple of photos around here someplace.....

The Soviets also have a 120 and the Chinese have a 120. The Chinese does not appear to be as accurate, but it is cheaper and it also looks like it will be for sale on the arms market.

In the US ATK and GD-OTS have linked up with the Brits for some development as the vid shows in the article Slick posted. Not sure of the US has decided on the 81 or 120, or both. But cost appears to be an issue with these mortars.

The 240mm nuke is not guided unless they made a second one with guidance. Cutaway images of the guided 240mm are available in the Russian web.

I think it is difficult to say now. It easily can be that something got mixed in the translation.

Also: why guiding a nuke? 500m back or forth will not make much of a difference when it sets off. Just a thought.
