There are two "Schools of Thought" on the meaning of the "S" of the S-Mine, the first one says that the "S" means "Shrapnel", while the second considers it "Spreng."
As I understand, I think the right meaning is "Spreng".

According to H.Dv.220/4b " Schtzenmine". On page 145 title says "Schtzenminen" and after that are descriptions of S.Mi.35, S.Mi.44 and S.Mi.42 ( wooden box ).
The mine does spring out of the ground but it also contains shrapnel, the only mine that does, the others are either tin or wooden containers. I would be content to say that both spring and shrapnel would cover both.
