Sorry about the small photo (its from a mobile 'phone) but this has just been found on a table in my local. I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to identify it?

Use a micrometer and measure the OD. Are you sure it is .303 British? Yours appears to be made of cupro-nickel ( silver in color). They used lots of cupro- nickel in WW1, and up to WW2. I have a few vintage MG belts of Maxim 7.62x54 Finnish made, VPT headstamped, dated 1937-1940, I kept a few can fulls because they are " silver", and the belts are an impressive 12 ft long.
