Small WW2 metal box

I inherited a small metal box from my father in law. For a long time I have kept various oddments such as staples, nuts and bolts, etc., in it.
It measures 4 and 1/16" (104mm) long, by 3 and 2/16 (78mm) wide by 3 and 1/4" (83mm) high.
It has the War Department WD impressed on the lid with an arrow between the "W" and the "D".
There are the remains of two hinges at the back of the lid where it was once attached to the tin and at the front there are two loops, one on the lid and one on the tin, soldered in place - presumably so that a small padlock could be attached.
I wonder if anyone has come across one of these and knows what it once contained?
A clue might lie in the fact that my late father in law was a member of a bomb disposal squad in the Royal Engineers during WW2, so did it possibly hold detonators or fuses, maybe?
