South African .303" headstamp

Hi to all,
turned this South African fired .303" case up yesterday....as you can see the VII on the headstamp has been over stamped with X and a number 6 added.
Any ideas chaps?....absolutely nothing to do with civilian reloaders ect as this case 100% originates from a British military research and development site

Cheers
Tony

Unless you can find the trial report you will never know the reason!

I have several .303 inch cases overstamped in a similar way. One is "W7" for example on an RG Mark 7 case. I doubt if the South African origin is significant as they probably used whatever rounds were to hand.

Now that is really helpful, isn't it!

Always possible that it was reloaded with a Mk.VI bullet, for some reason. Admittedly, 1944 or after is a bit late for Mk.VI, but if there were some old .303s they were using that still had the sights that were calibrated for that ammunition... Kynoch were still making Mk.VI well into the 1920s. However, if Mk.VI was required in 1944, why reload S. African cases? An interesting puzzle. R.

Thankyou TonyE and ydnum.........one for the mystery part of my collection me thinks
