Hi,
I got this stielhandgranate, when i recived it, it was wet, because it been found in a lake. Now it's dry, and I would need some tips for conservation of wood and the "head". If you can tell me how do you conserve you pieces.

Humm, there may have been a good reason why it was "tossed" into the lake - it looks intact to me?

Is it "INERT"???

Cheers

To me it is nothing short of amazing how well the lake found WW1 ordnance fared after 90 some odd years in the drink. Here in the US we have a supplier of lake found m1915 offensive German WW1 discus grenades which come preserved remarkably well as this stick is......Dano

Hey Dan,

Yes I also thought the condition was rather "excellent" for being immerse for so long.

It may have been in a deep section of the lake or perhaps in mud?

From memory, the oxidation levels near the surface are much higher than deeper down (this applies also for salt water), so shallow stuff just gets really rusty!

Baldari,

You may want to google some of those historic wooden shipwrecks sites that have been raised and in the process of being perserved - may provide you some insight into how they go about perserving the wood etc.

Cheers

I use Ballistol for wood preserving. Also used it on a Austrian stick found in an Italian cave some years ago. Wood was extremely wet when found after 90 years in the cave, put it in a plastic bag and used Ballistol on it to preserve the wood. After spraying the wooden for several weeks the water was slowly replaced by the oil. It is now a solid piece of wood.

Baldari, nice looking stick.
