I visited this museum in 2008. Interesting exhibits but I don’t recall it being very informative.
An interesting museum to visit in Japan is the Kamikaze Peace Museum in Chiran. http://www.chiran-tokkou.jp/english/about/heiwakaikan/index.html You can take a bus direct from Kagoshima.
While in Kagoshima there is the Museum Of The Meiji Restoration worth visiting and if you have time take the Jetfoil over to Nishinoomote on Tanegashima Island for a day trip and visit the Teppokan gun museum.
