trench knife

Hi, just wondering if anybody could shed any light on this, i was given this the other day and just can't find anything on it, is it a trench knife of some sorts? i have not seen a scabbard like this before with an off set belt attachment like this, any help would be much appreciated.

Not a 100% but looks like WW2 Italian fighting knife.

Italian for sure: it's the "Pugnale da Assaltatore mod. 39".
